Hair Sketch

Hair sketch is a drawing board, not a haircare one, so everything here is about getting hair right in pencil. It starts where beginners usually go wrong, blocking the silhouette before drawing a single strand, then works through shading for volume, following the flow from the crown, and the graphite grades that build depth - 2H for guide lines, 2B to 4B for mid shadows, 6B for the darkest cores between sections. The idea pages cover long, short and curly hair, girl, boy and anime hair, and full hairstyle sketches, with a male versus female comparison and a reference page for practice. Two tutorials walk through a sketch step by step. Every image on this board is a pencil drawing on paper, never a photograph.

Best for: Sketchbook practice, character art and beginners whose drawn hair keeps looking flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you draw hair for beginners?

Block the whole silhouette first and treat hair as large shapes, not individual strands. Drawing strands too early is the number-one beginner mistake. Once the outline reads correctly, break it into a few big sections, shade each one, then add a small number of detail strands on top.

What pencils are best for drawing hair?

A small range covers it: 2H for light guide lines, 2B to 4B for mid shadows, and 6B for the darkest cores between sections. A blending stump softens transitions more cleanly than a finger, and a kneaded eraser lifts highlights back out without tearing the paper.

Why does my hair drawing look flat?

Usually because the strands are drawn parallel and evenly spaced. Hair grows in sections from the crown and follows a curve, so vary the direction and let strands group and separate. Leaving paper white for the highlights and pushing the darks between sections is what creates roundness.
